What is Thatch?

Thatch is the build up of grass clippings and leaf litter which collects along the surface of the soil. A thatch layer of 1/2 inch can work hand in hand with soil requirements. Such a thatch layer functions as if it were a mulch. It moderates the temperature of the soil and helps it retain moisture. As microbes in the soil break it down, nutrients are released into the soil. But sometimes the organic matter that makes up that thatch layer accumulates faster than it can break down. It becomes too thick (1 inch or thicker), leading to the following problems:

  • It forms a barrier that deprives the root system of air, water, and nutrients.

  • It promotes insect infestations.

  • Lawn diseases are more likely to take hold.

  • Patches of lawn with thick layers of thatch become spongy. This keeps you from mowing your lawn at the ideal height.

The build up of thatch can greatly reduce the health of your turf and efficacy of your lawn’s treatments. This layer of thatch can block essential nutrients as well as oxygen from getting down into the soil.

Why is Dethatching in Central Florida Important?

Dethatching your lawn is a very important service on Zoysia and Bermuda lawns, which are common in central Florida. Since these types of grasses need to be mowed at a shorter height than other grasses, the thatch layer can be seen easily and is unsightly for these highly maintained grasses. In some cases, major build up of thatch can cause turf to die out since it blocks the proper nutrient and oxygen movement.

Another very important reason to have your Zoysia and Bermuda dethatched is that it can hold more moisture than needed. This moisture retention can cause different types of fungus to grow and threaten the health of your turf. Thatch is also a place where insects lay their eggs. So by removing the built up thatch layer, you can help reduce the threat of insect damage.

Platinum Lawn Solutions dethatching services include fertilization with our organic based fertilizer. This specific fertilizer is used to help rebuild the soil structure and feed the turf the nutrients it needs.
